Stendhal arranca con una suerte de prologo sobre el siglo XVI y la mentalidad de los florentinos pero pronto nos comienza a narrar un amor imposible entre un bandido bueno llamado Julio Branciforte y una joven noble la bella Elena Campireali. Poco a poco la historia adquiere profundidad psicologica y pasa de lo pintoresco a lo dramatico: los personajes cometen errores y son egoistas y extremadamente crueles todo lo cual se justifica en nombre de ese sentimiento desproporcionado que es el amor en la Italia renacentista.
