Over 200 color photographs by photojournalist Jasmine Rossi through which to admire a legendary land between two oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific, covering an area of one million square kilometers. Patagonia continues to be one of the last great frontiers in todayœs shrinking world. It lies on the final tapering segment of the South American continent, and is closer to Antarctica than any other part of the world. This land of legend, between two oceans, stretches over one million square kilometres (621,000 square miles). Due to its geographic isolation and harsh climate, Patagonia was not colonized until the 1880's, and continues to have one of the lowest population densities in the world. Patagonia's inhabitants are as diverse as the Mapuche Indians to the north and the blue-eyed sheep farmers of English and Welsh descent to the south. From the temperate rainforests to the west, to the vast desert plateaus to the east, from the largest ice-fields outside of the polar regions, to the uncountable islands and fjords, Patagonia is a place of wonders. It is home to the world's smallest deer: the pudu, and the world's largest flying bird: the condor. In Patagonia, the Andes are not very high but they rise straight into the sky from sea-level which makes them all the more impressive, and in Tierra del Fuego they fall steeply into the South Atlantic Ocean. Jasmine Rossi is a German-Italian photographer who fell in love with Patagonia when she went to live there for two years in a ranger station at the Valdes Peninsula, a time that culminated in her first book The Wild Shores of Patagonia (Ed. Larivière & Harry N. Abrams, 2000). Two further books on Patagonia followed: The Spirit of Patagonia (2002) and The Four Seasons of Patagonia (2005). Patagonia and its Spirit is the result of over 20 years of photography in this wonderful land at the end of the worldʺ.
