An analysis of films relating to Nazism and/or the Holocaust, from the period of the Weimar Republic to the present. Discusses Nazi, fascist, French, American, Italian, Spanish, and postwar German cinematography. The Holocaust has been approached by filmmakers in three forms. Documentaries include films such as "Memory of the Camps" by Sydney Bernstein (1945), "Ostatni etap" ("The Last Stage") by Wanda Jakubowska (1948), and "Nuit et brouillard" by Alain Resnais (1955). Fictional films include "Kapo" by Gillo Pontecorvo (1960), "Pasażerka" ("The Passenger") by Andrzej Munk (1961-63), "Il portiere di notte" ("The Night Porter") by Liliana Cavani (1973), "Schindler's List" by Steven Spielberg (1993), and "La vita è bella" by Roberto Benigni (1997). The third approach is represented by Claude Lanzmann in his film "Shoah" (1985). Lanzmann rules out both fictional resources and archival material, making use only of survivors' and witnesses' testimonies, which he considers the most authentic voice for transmitting the experience of the Shoah.
